CNYPSG and friends
took steps to boost public awareness of Parkinson's disease and to advertise
the Parkinson's Awareness Walk (PAW) at the Presbyterian Home on September 11,
when they joined in the Ilion Doo Dah Parade held on July 23. It was a fun time. There were ten people in our
contingent, led by Elizabeth Brewer and her granddaughter who, between them,
carried our CNYPSG banner. Most of
our group were attired in clown outfits or wore signs promoting PAW.
Our
banner or flag was a gift from Walt and Sandy Huegel and was made by their
daughter. The flag has been used
well having been on display at many a health fair in the area as well as at our
meetings and events. It traveled
to New York's Central Park for the Unity Walk one year, and now it has finally
been proudly paraded. Thanks,
Walt. That was a good idea.

On Saturday, September 18, once again, CNYPG hired a bus to take us to the fall symposium in Rochester, and, once again, this joint effort of the University of Rochester Neurology Department and the Parkinson's Support Group of Upstate NY was excellent, well worth the trip. We heard from four U of R faculty members on the topics of Parkinson Basics, Rochester-based PD Research, Depression in PD, and Deep Brain Stimulation. We also heard a brief presentation by Tony Joseph on the PD wing at the Presbyterian Home for Central NY. The highlight of the day was the address by Ruth Hagestuen, RN, MA, who is the Director of Field Services for the National Parkinson Foundation. Her topic was "Learning to Live Creatively with PD," and she was just brimming over with simple yet innovative ideas. All in all, we enjoyed an interesting educational day.
